Healthcare Interoperability Services
Patient data rarely lives in one system. Labs, referral networks, health information exchanges, and payer systems all need to exchange clinical data reliably and securely with your EHR — and the standards that make that possible are HL7 and FHIR.
What HL7 and FHIR Actually Are
HL7 — Health Level Seven International — is the standards development organization that has produced healthcare data exchange standards for decades. FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is HL7’s modern, API-based standard: it defines “resources” — structured representations of things like patients, observations, and medications — and a RESTful web API for exchanging them, which is why FHIR has become the default approach for connecting EHRs, apps, and health information exchanges using the same web technologies that power everyday APIs.
In practice, most healthcare organizations still run a mix: older HL7 v2 messaging interfaces (ADT feeds, lab results, orders) sitting alongside newer FHIR-based integrations for patient access APIs, referrals, and app connectivity. Armorstack’s interoperability engagement maps your current interface landscape, identifies where a legacy HL7 v2 interface should be modernized to FHIR, and builds or hardens the integration layer — with the same access controls and audit logging discipline applied to every other PHI touchpoint in your environment.
Because interoperability inherently means PHI crossing organizational boundaries, every interface is reviewed for HIPAA-compliant transport security and, where applicable, business associate agreement coverage with the receiving system.
What’s Included
Interface Inventory & Risk Review
Mapping existing HL7 v2 and FHIR interfaces and where PHI crosses system boundaries.
FHIR Migration Planning
Prioritized roadmap for modernizing legacy interfaces to FHIR where it reduces risk or cost.
Secure Transport & Access Controls
Every interface reviewed against the same HIPAA transport and access standards as your core systems.
BAA Coordination
Confirming business associate agreements are in place with every system receiving PHI.
Interoperability work is typically scoped alongside EHR consulting and grounded in Armorstack’s HIPAA compliance program.
