Alert Forwarding vs. Active Response
Per Gartner’s Market Guide framing: MSSPs help manage and monitor security devices, while MDR providers deliver remote incident response as a standard part of the service — the buyer purchases an outcome (“threats stopped”), not tool management. The 2025 Gartner requirements for MDR specifically call for 24×7 human-led staffing, immediate remote mitigation beyond alerting, and daily engagement with individual customer data.
Why This Distinction Matters to Your Buying Decision
The terms get blurred deliberately in vendor marketing because “MDR” tests better than “MSSP” — so a lot of alert-forwarding services now market themselves as MDR without the response capability to back it up. The way to tell the difference in a sales conversation is simple: ask exactly who takes action when a real incident fires at 2 a.m., and what they are contractually allowed to do without waiting on you.
Armorstack doesn’t use either label for itself. We operate as a Managed Intelligence Provider (MIP) — a category built specifically because the MSP/MSSP split leaves accountability gaps between IT and security vendors. See our MDR vs. EDR vs. XDR page for how the underlying tooling relates to the service layer described here.
