HL7 — Health Level Seven International — is the standards development organization that has produced healthcare data exchange standards for decades. FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is HL7’s modern, API-based standard: it defines “resources” — structured representations of things like patients, observations, and medications — and a RESTful web API for exchanging them, which is why FHIR has become the default approach for connecting EHRs, apps, and health information exchanges using the same web technologies that power everyday APIs.

In practice, most healthcare organizations still run a mix: older HL7 v2 messaging interfaces (ADT feeds, lab results, orders) sitting alongside newer FHIR-based integrations for patient access APIs, referrals, and app connectivity.
